Grace In Defeat

This story about losing badly has prompted me to write a few words about grace in defeat. It’s actually a very important quality for winners to cultivate because you are taking responsibility for your loss rather than generating anger at external factors, for example one’s dastardly opponent.

Of course many people lose disgracefully, especially on the servers where their real identities are a secret. A very common practice is not to resign a lost game but instead just go away and let the opponent win on time. Another is to insult an opponent who has just won but doesn’t want a rematch. They can of course be blacklisted so you don’t have to play them again, but they can always create a new identity.
