Hastings, due to start tomorrow, is one of the most famous tournament venues in the World due partly to the epic tournament held there in 1895 and then events held continuously from 1920. Of course things have changed a bit over the years, for example these days the event is held in the middle of winter (the 1895 event held in the middle of summer).
Do I regret not being there? Not really, though for years I kept forgetting the promise I made to myself not to return. To the best of my recollection this was the last time I played there, so is my memory getting better or is there a limit to the number of times we make the same mistake?
It’s probably the latter, which reminds me of one of the best insights I’ve had about the learning process. A genius learns after making the same mistake 5-6 times whilst most people are doomed to repeat it forever.
