For thirty years, Hugh Thomas Patterson was the guitarist for a number of San Francisco punk, ska and reggae bands including No Alternative and The Offs. On the road, he played a lot of chess with his band mates. Upon semi retiring from playing music full time, he was invited to teach a chess class. He fell in love with teaching chess and now teaches in 10 different San Francisco/Bay Area schools. He also teaches chess to at-risk youth. Since his entire life revolves around chess, his hobbies are limited but include bird watching, microscopy and creative writing.
