This fascinating talk by game designer Jane McGonigal presents plenty of reasons why we should play more and work less! Western culture often seems to glorify work and productivity, but is it something that makes us feel glad to be alive?
There’s a strong case to be made that games bring us far more satisfaction, and chess is the king of games. Being locked in combat against another mind is certainly more dramatic and challenging than doing the crossword, which is why so many people have chosen to devote their lives to studying its intricacies.
It can be argued that chess fulfills no useful function, but the same might be said about all art forms. In reality they contribute massively towards our personal growth, and on many different levels.
I truly believe that if more of us achieve a better balance between work and play we’ll be much the better for it. Cultivated and balanced individuals make better and wiser decisions than workaholics with a narrow perspective.
