It’s amazing how well prepared people are today with their databases and having an engine search for improvements etc. Of course this takes a large part of the skill out of playing the early stages and will even weaken players’ intuitive abilities.

This of course is the subtext to why some players regard the idea of any rule changes with horror (how on earth can one decide on one’s early moves without extensive computer preparation?) whilst others try to throw their opponents on their own resources. With the Veresov opening for example:
