Will Chess Ever Be As Popular As Poker?

Here’s another youtube gem featuring former World Champion Anatoly Karpov that has just 752 views at the time of writing (hey Anatoly, even I can do better than that!). Will chess ever be as popular as poker?

I’m not sure that poker is more popular (how are we defining ‘popularity’) but professional chess players have been migrating in droves to poker. Is this because of higher ideals or the financial rewards? I’d guess that it has to be the latter given that successful poker players lie for a living.

Meanwhile the trump card that chess has is that most parents aren’t that keen on their kids playing poker and therefore they are unlikely to ferry them around for poker weekends. But with the educational benefits of chess becoming clearer all the time they’ll take them all over the show to develop their chess interest.
